The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, Department of History, Florida State University invites the general public to a free lecture “Re-examining French Success in the First Italian Campaign, 1796-97” presented by Professor Rafe Blaufarb on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, Jacksonville, Florida.  Professor Blaufarb is the Ben Weider Eminent Scholar in French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Studies and Director of the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution.

He has written several monographs on a range of subjects from the idea of meritocracy in the French army during the Old Regime and French Revolution to the history of noble tax exemption under the Old Regime. His latest book, The Great Demarcation: The French Revolution and the Invention of Modern Property(Oxford, 2016), deals with the invention of the modern idea of property during the French Revolution.

The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, Department of History, Florida State University invites the general public to attend a free film screening of “The Great War” a three-part documentary featured in the PBS American Experience series, and Q&A session with the film’s writer, director, and producer Stephen Ives and historian Michael Neiberg on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, Jacksonville, Florida. Stephen Ives is a groundbreaking documentarian with over 20 years experience in television, he is well known for his work on the American Experience, PBS, HBO and THE WEST, one of the most watched PBS programs of all time. Michael Neiberg is a leading historian of the First World War; he is currently a professor of history at the U.S. Army War College and has written prominent books such as Dance of the Furies: Europe and the Outbreak of World War I  (Harvard University Press, 2013), which the Wall Street Journal recently named one of the five best books ever written about the First World War. “The Great War” tells the diverse story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and American troops. The series explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. The series premieres on PBS April 10-12.

The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, Department of History, Florida State University and Barnes and Noble Booksellers invite the general public to a book signing of The Battle of Crécy: A Casebook, by the editors Michael Livingston and Kelly DeVries, winners of the Society for Military History Distinguished Book Award 2017, on Friday, March 31, 2017 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at Barnes and Noble, St. John’s Town Center 10280 Mid Town Pkwy, Jacksonville, Florida. Michael Livingston is an associate professor of English at the Citadel and Kelly DeVries is a professor of history at Loyola University, Maryland; their book uses documents that have never before been available in English to illuminate one of the most important battles of the medieval world.

The Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution is a unique institution of graduate education. As part of the History Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida State University, it is the only graduate program in the United States devoted solely to the historical study of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era.  Its M.A. and Ph.D. students have conducted archival research in almost every country in Europe, as well as in much of North and South America. Since 1963 it has granted more than 100 graduate degrees (over 50 M.A.s and more than 50 Ph.D.’s). The Institute also hosts an annual Weider History Conference bringing together early-career scholars from Europe and North America to present their cutting-edge research in the field of French Revolutionary historical study, organizes international conferences, publishes new research, sponsors a Distinguished Lecture Series at Florida State University, and is a founding member of the Consortium on the Revolutionary Era. The Institute also offers its students and visiting researchers access to the French Revolution and Napoleon Collection at Florida State University's Strozier Library. With over 20,000 rare titles from the period, it is one of the finest research collections of its kind.

 

The Society for Military History (SMH), founded in 1933, is an international organization devoted to advancing the study of military history worldwide, and through this award, recognizes excellent scholarly publications in the field of military history. The annual meetings of the SMH serve to expose members and non-members to the latest research in Military History.
